INTRODUCTION: Snoring is created by a narrowing of your air passages, either from poor sleep posture or abnormalities of the soft tissues in your throat. It can be mild, meaning that it ceases when you wake up and turn over, or severe, when you suffer continuously, regardless of sleep position. It is understood to cause sleep deprivation to both the snorer and those who hear him/her, as well as effects such as daytime drowsiness, irritability, loss of focus, reduced libido.

It’s a condition that gets worse with age and is usually harmless. Snoring is more common in those who are overweight. Statistics are frequently contradictory, but at least 30% of grown-ups and maybe as many as 50% of people in some demographics snore.

APNEA: The word “apnea” means the lack of breathing. Besides the ‘noise’, more complex problems such as sleep apnea can be consistent with the symptom of snoring. If your child snores often, have your doctor check for sleep apnea. While snoring is caused by narrow airways, sleep apnea is a real breathing obstruction, which requires the sleeper to awaken to begin breathing again. A person with this problem wakes up many times a night to regain breathing, but often remembers nothing at all about the awakenings.

Snoring is a common symptom of sleep apnea, but by itself does not involve the cessation of breathing. About one-half of people who snore loudly have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Not all people with these problems are overweight. But weight gain will make existing snoring or apnea even worse. Avoid alcohol, muscle relaxants, and certain medications. These substances are known to increase these sleep problems.

TREATMENT: Most treatments revolves around clearing the blockage in the breathing passage. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a relatively new surgical procedure. This treatment applies radiofrequency energy and heat (between 77C to 85C) to the soft tissue at the back of the throat, such as the soft palate and uvula, creating scarring of the tissue underneath the skin. The procedure takes less than one hour, is often carried out on an outpatient basis, and normally requires several treatment sessions.

See your doctor or dentist to discuss the medical treatments available and to decide which might help you. The treatment you need depends on whether you have simple snoring or with sleep apnea. If you do have sleep apnea, then your treatment will also depend on the severity of your problem. It requires close monitoring of your treatment.

CONCLUSION: Snoring is the vibration of respiratory structures and the resulting sound, due to obstructed air movement during breathing while sleeping. It can be reduced by changing position on the bed. Sleeping on the side is a possible solution. To avoid rolling back it is possible to place a pillow or a “ball” on the back; raising the head is also another option, useful both while lying on the back or for supporting the head while lying on the side.

It is a condition that can affect both the physical and social intimacies of a relationship and can also be a sign of sleep apnea, which can be life-endangering. It not only effects your self, but also everyone around you.

By knowing the causes and cures, you can better your health, your relationships, and, of course, your sleep. Habitual snoring has been found in about 24 percent of adult women and 40 percent of adult men. The Majority of people don’t know that just by changing variables in your environment (like the temperature inside your room), you could put up a good fight against your problem. Smoking tends to produce nasal congestion, thus giving rise to the condition. The best way to prevent it is to quit smoking. Alcohol can also be held responsible for the problem. Reduce your alcohol consumption and that should take care of your snoring problem too.

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by a pause in breathing. This pause in breathing is involuntary – and the person is not even aware that at one moment in time, he forgot to breathe.

This breathing abnormality is caused by two things – and such a cause determines the kind of sleep apnea that the person is suffering from.

Obtrusive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

This type of apnea is the most common. As the name suggests, this occurs when there is an “obstruction” on the airway.

When you sleep, the muscles in your upper airway relax. You know that when muscles relax, they tend to collapse. Indeed, this is a natural occurrence. But there are dilator muscles that work to keep them from collapsing, so that the air passage remains clear. When the dilator muscles don’t do their work effectively, that’s when you have difficulty breathing, and sleep apnea occurs.

OSA is treated with the use of CPAP machines. CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airflow Pressure. As such, CPAP machines provide a certain level of pressure – and keep it in that level – to prevent the muscles from blocking the airway.

The air pressure required by most patients ranges from 6 to 14 cm H20. Typical CPAP machines can deliver pressures at 4 to 20 cm H20. Of course, the pressure to be used in CPAP machines has to be determined by a specialist. This is established after a series of tests have been conducted. This is the reason why there has to be CPAP trials for new patients – to determine the “appropriateness” of the pressure introduced to them. Incorrect pressure could lead do more damage – than good – to the sleep apnea sufferer.

CPAP machines also come with masks to act as an interface between the person’s airway and the source of the airflow pressure. Masks could either be nasal or full-face. CPAP full-face masks – in Toronto or elsewhere – cover the whole face, while nasal masks cover only the nose.

Central Sleep Apnea (CSA)

This type of sleep apnea is caused by an aberration in the central nervous system (CNS). Simply put, the brain fails to properly signal your airways to breathe. The CSA is the less common type, and the more dangerous one. In contrast to OSA patients, those suffering from CSA wake up as a result of reduced levels of oxygen in the brain.

Of course, if you don’t breathe, you will have less supply of oxygen, and more of carbon dioxide. The lack in oxygen will signal your lungs to suck in air, and for you to be able to do this, you have to wake up.

The field of sleep apnea is a well-researched one. The internet, for example, has loads of information about this disorder and CPAP machines. There are also a number of alternative treatments methods available, ranging from using dental devices to undergoing a surgery.

So if you suspect that you are suffering from sleep apnea, don’t panic. It’s not the end of the world.
Consult your doctor. And if it’s really sleep apnea that you have, there are many treatment procedures to choose from.

Remstar Pro with C-Flex Error code E-24?

I can’t figure out what to do with this. Every time I turn it on, the error code pops up. I’ve tried restarting it many times without any progress. I’m afraid my insurance won’t cover this.

Advice please!

Is that a treadmill? Unplug it for a couple of minutes, then try to restart. There may be an overload switch on the machine that you have to press or something. Read the manual, even if you have too look it up at the Remstar website.
