As much as CPAP masks will deliver better sleep and better health, thanks to its role in delivering compressed air into your airways, these devices can also pose minor problems that may or may not discourage the user from availing of its benefits. If you fall into the first category, there is good news for you.

Problems in using a CPAP mask can be resolved with a few practical solutions. Well, of course, it will be a matter of trial and error in many instances but your efforts will be amply rewarded in the end. And please, do not stop using CPAP masks even with initial problems in using them. Like it or not, you need them to make your breathing and your life easier.

Difficulty in Adjusting

Your doctor will tell you that one in three sleep apnea patients will have more-than-average difficulty in adjusting to a CPAP mask. As such, you need not fret about your case especially when you will eventually become accustomed to wearing it if and when you give it time and be patient.

Better yet, wear the mask even during the daytime in your house. By the time you must wear any one of your CPAP masks to your sleepy time, you will be comfortable with it on your face.

Nasal Congestion and Dry Eyes

There are two main reasons for nasal congestion – diet and moisture. First, you should look into your diet to control, if not eliminate, foods that cause mucus build-up like dairy products, white flour, meat, eggs, potatoes, beans, rice, grains, fish, peanuts and fats. Well, of course, you have to eat a healthy diet filled with these foods so it is best to ask a nutritionist for professional advice.

Second, you should look into the benefits of a humidifier to provide moisture in the room. You may also consider nasal sprays to remedy this most common of problems when using CPAP masks.

As for dry eyes, this is usually an issue with an ill-fitting mask. As such, it is very important to choose the right kind pf mask – right fit, right size and right style.

Forced Air Intolerance

The ramp feature of CPAP machines is the right solution to the problem of forced air intolerance. Basically, it sets tolerable levels for air pressure delivered to the airways, which gradually and automatically increases to the prescribed level. Of course, CPAP masks have a hand in it because you need to have the right fit in order to fully enjoy the ramp feature.

Allergies and Sores

Allergic breakouts can occur because of the silicone of the mask coming into contact with sensitive skin. Skin rashes will be seen around the mouth and nose areas as well as in the forehead. This problem will be remedied by regularly washing the mask with mild liquid detergent and water.

As for sores, these skin problems are usually due to the tight attachment of the mask unto your face. You can counteract this problem by finding the right fit as well as in choosing a mask with adjustable straps.

Indeed, the problems associated with the use of CPAP masks have solutions. It is up to you to find the right solution to the right problem.

My husband suffers from restless legs syndrome what can you recommend for a good night’s sleep?

Every night he kicks and shifts his legs from side to side and if he lies on his back it looks like he is riding a bicycle. Its so bad that we sleep in different bedrooms just so that i can get a decent nights sleep. The GP has prescribed sedatives, sleeping tablets, relaxant drugs etc but all these makes it worse. During the day his legs on the outside are completely numb. You can stick a needle in anywhere in legs from hips to his feet and cant feel anything. Any advice anyone please?

Your dog could be scratching until she cut her ear because she has ear mites, but she could also have an ear infection causing extreme pain. Or her cut can be superficial and just need a veterinarian to prescribe a special antibiotic cream. All the lamp shade collar aka Elizabeth Collar or E collar…. is just going to do is keep her from messing with her ear, its not going to treat her ailment. Make an apt. to the vet and have it checked out.

I use a bipap resperonics sleep gear. I would like to insulate the tubing for warmth incoming air flow fjw75?

Doesn’t sound like such a great idea on the face of it. I’d sure check with my pulmonologist before trying it.

Why do you want this? Do you sleep in an unusually cold room?

I’ve had my respironics cpap (not bipap, but same general thing) for many years and not had this issue.

Furthermore, as an engineer, I do not see how insulating the tubing would add any heat to the air, since the pump takes in air at room temperature to begin with.

Your CPAP/ BiPAP machine should have the following:

* CPAP/ BiPAP unit has an electrically operated generator, which uses a blower to open and maintain the airflow necessary for treatment.

* A Heated Humidifier with your CPAP machine or BiPAP machine is recommended to reduce nasal congestion or dryness and makes CPAP/ BiPAP therapy more comfortable. Keep in mind body temperature is usually at 98.6 degrees and air temperature would be about 72 degrees making the air cool and dry. To prevent condensation in the tubing you may insulate the tubing with bubble wrap. It is also helpful if the CPAP machine or BiPAP machine is positioned lower than the bed so the tubing is in a downward direction to the heated humidifier.

* Patient Interface should include a mask or nasal pillow system held in place by aheadgear which connects to the CPAP/ BiPAP unit via tubing.

Operation of the CPAP/ BiPAP Unit:

* Place the CPAP machine or BiPAP machine on a dresser, bedside table, or nightstand

* Do not place unit on the floor

* Make sure the area has good circulation and the air inlet is not blocked byanything

* When traveling to other countries with different electrical requirements, check your operation manual for specific instructions

CPAP Machine or BiPAP System Set-up:

* Connect one end of cpap tubing to the air outlet of the CPAP/ BiPAP machine with the other end of the cpap tubing going to the CPAP/ BiPAP nasal or full face mask and attach the headgear.

* Place the nasal CPAP mask over your nose or if you have the nasal pillow system insert them into your nostrils.

* Secure the CPAP headgear making sure it should be snug. The CPAP headgear should never be tight or loose. Make necessary adjustment to your CPAP mask and headgear and make sure the CPAP system is closed and no air is leaking.

CPAP/ BiPAP Care & Maintenance:

* CPAP/BiPAP machines should be wiped down periodically with a clean damp cloth. ALWAYS disconnect the CPAP/BiPAP units from the electrically power source before cleaning.

* CPAP Mask/Nasal Pillows/Tubing: Daily cleaning is recommended. One part vinegar to three parts water solution is the best cleaning agent as it does not leave a soap film over a period of time. Make sure to rinse thoroughly with warm water to remove vinegar odor. You may also use a mild detergent with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and let air dry.

* Headgear: Weekly cleaning of the headgear is recommended to maximize the life of your headgear, hand wash with mild detergent or wash using the gentle cycle.

NEVER use bleach and do not machine dry CPAP Equipment

* The Heated Humidifier Reservoir: Daily cleaning is recommended. One part vinegar to three parts water solution is the best cleaning agent as it does not leave a soap film over a period of time. Make sure to rinse thoroughly with warm water to remove vinegar odor. You may also use a mild detergent with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and let air dry. Water should be changed daily with distilled or sterile water. Do not go pass the fill line.

Helpful Hints for maintaining CPAP Masks and Machines

* Washing your face to remove excess facial oils before using cpap mask will help to achieve a leak free fit and prolong the useful life of your mask.

* If you are experiencing nasal or airway dryness and irritation use a nasal saline or water based lubricant. DO NOT use a petroleum based lubricant product.

* If you are experiencing morning dry eyes readjust or tighten the headgear and/or mask at the top. Be careful not to over tighten, as this could cause a pressure point on the bridge of the nose.

* Do not leave your cpap tubing or plastic parts out in direct sunlight for drying. This could cause a premature yellowing and cracking of the plastic.

* CPAP supplies or BiPAP supplies should be replaced on a three months basis to prevent infections or as needed.

EVALUATION PERIOD: 2 weeks

ADJUSTMENT: This Mask is easy to adjust, as I am finding all the ResMed masks have adopted similar headgear designs.

COMFORT: Compared to say the swift mask, I would say this mask is less comfortable. However to be fair we would have to compare it to a standard full face mask, as it provides the same function. In that regard it is at the top of its class for comfort.

SEAL: Again, another good habit from the folks at ResMed, they include 3 pillow sizes with the mask. This allows the user to make adjustments improving the seal. There are many ways to adjust this mask, but the common flaw my experts and I found was that once you got the pillows sealed, the mouth would need readjustment, and vice verse. It should be noted that this was not a major obstacle, just a bump in the road, as I got used to the mask, it seamed to be less of a problem.

AIRFLOW NOISE: Very quite.

MOVEMENT: This mask is ideal for back sleepers. side sleepers can get away with it by positioning the pillow so that the mask hangs off the edge. I was able to move around without much readjusting, our other experts agreed.

OVERALL: John is a full face mask user, he currently uses a different mask. He is excited to be using the Liberty and will continue to give me feedback when he can. We found the liberty mask to be a great alternative to the standard full face mask. ResMed has another full face mask I am very fond of and will be reviewing soon.
